This Association shall be known as the ILLINOIS GRADE SCHOOL MUSIC ASSOCIATION, SOUTHERN DIVISION.
ARTICLE 2 PURPOSE
Section 1
The purpose of the Illinois Grade School Music Association, Southern Division, shall be to encourage, aid and further music education in the elementary, middle and junior high schools in the State of Illinois.
Section 2
The Association shall sponsor contests among elementary, middle and junior high school bands, orchestras, choruses, soloists and ensembles in the Districts of the Southern Division. Annually, the Association shall conduct a final or State contest, bringing together the qualifying participants of the Districts.
ARTICLE 3 MEMBERSHIP
Section 1
ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP. Active members of this Association shall be those public and denominational schools represented by the music directors and administrators who have paid the membership dues established by the Association.
Section 2
ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP. Associate members of this Association shall be those interested parties who have paid the dues established by the Association. This membership carries all privileges except the right to vote at business meetings of the Association or to hold office in the Association.
ARTICLE 4 OFFICIAL POSITIONS
Section 1
The officers of the Association shall be: President, Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer.
Section 2
Each District shall appoint or elect a chairperson to manage District affairs. The appointment or election of the District Chairperson shall not be contingent upon whether or not this person is a contest host of any particular year.
Section 3
The EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE shall be composed of the President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer and District Chairpersons. The immediate Past President shall be an ex-officio member.
In the event that a specific area (band, chorus, orchestra) is not represented on the Executive Committee, the President shall have the right to appoint a consultant in that particular area.
Section4
A non-salaried position of Officer-In-Training shall be elected upon notice of impending retirement of any officer. The Officer-In-Training shall then shadow the current officer for one year prior to assuming the position the following year.
ARTICLE 5 ELECTIONS
Section 1
All officers of the Association shall be elected by a simple majority of the Active Membership in attendance at the Annual Business Meeting and shall serve for a term of one year.
Vacancies which occur between elections shall be filled by presidential appointment with the approval of the Executive Committee.
Section 2
VOTING. Active members in good standing shall have the right to vote. Each membership shall be entitled to one vote only.
In such cases where decisions are close, the membership may request by motion to conduct and record a Roll Call vote of the membership present at the business meeting.
In matters of policy which concern a specific classification (band, orchestra, chorus), only members of this classification shall vote.
Section 3
The NOMINATING COMMITTEE shall be appointed by the President. This committee shall be composed of the District Chairperson or his representative from each District. One of the District Chairpersons shall be appointed by the President to serve in the capacity of presiding officer.
Section 4
NOMINATING PROCEDURE. The Nominating Committee shall submit a slate of candidates for the various offices to the membership of the Association at the annual business meeting of the Association. In the event the committee cannot agree on any one candidate for any one office, the slate submitted shall include the names of two candidates with the highest number of votes. Other nominations may be made from the floor.
ARTICLE 6 DISTRICTS
Section 1
The ILLINOIS GRADE SCHOOL MUSIC ASSOCIATION, SOUTHERN DIVISION, shall be comprised of five districts divided geographically by counties as follows:
DISTICT ONE Pike, Scott, Morgan, Sangamon, Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Montgomery
DISTRICT TWO Macon, Moultrie, Douglas, Edgar, Christian, Shelby, Coles, Clark, Cumberland, Fayette, Effingham, Jasper, Crawford
DISTRICT THREE Perry, Franklin, Hamilton, White, Jackson, Williamson, Saline, Gallatin, Union, Johnson, Pope, Hardin, Alexander, Pulaski, Massac, Randolph
DISTRICT FOUR Marion, Clay, Richland, Lawrence, Jefferson, Wayne, Edwards, Wabash
DISTRICT FIVE St. Clair, Clinton, Washington, Monroe, Madison, Bond
Section 2
This Association shall have the power to legislate in matters which concern the administration of the individual Districts. It shall be the duty of the officers of the Association to adjust differences which concern Districts. The general policy in the conduct of District affairs shall follow that of the Association insofar as local conditions may permit. The Association shall be the final authority in matters concerning the conduct of the Districts.
ARTICLE 7 MEETINGS
Section 1
The annual State Meeting of this Association shall be held prior to December 1 at a site designated by the President.
Section 2
Each District shall hold at least one meeting annually prior to the annual State Meeting of the Association.
Section 3
The Executive Committee shall meet prior to the annual State Meeting and at such other times as deemed necessary.
ARTICLE 8 FINANCE
Section 1
The operating expense of the Association shall be paid out of the general fund of the Association. Said fund shall consist of all monies received, such as school membership dues, solo, ensemble and organization per capita fees and monies received from other sources.
Section 2
The expenses of conducting the State Contests shall be borne by the Association, however, the Association shall assume no responsibility for the financing of a District Contest.
Section 3
The per annum salary and expense account of all officers and members of the Executive Committee shall be established by a two-thirds vote of the active membership in attendance at the annual State Meeting of the Association. Personal expenses shall include meals, lodging and mileage at a per mile rate established by the Association. Said expenses shall apply only when said officers and/or executive committee members presence is required on the Associations business.
Section 4
The Secretary-Treasurer shall be bonded to the upper limits of his yearly financial receipts.
Section 5
The Association shall have insurance adequate to cover the contest supply inventories stored by the Vice-President and the Secretary-Treasurer in their respective homes and/or schools.
ARTICLE 9 - COMMUNICATIONS
Section 1
All state communications shall be mailed to one music director and administrator of each school on the active roster of the Association.
Section 2
Copies of the Constitution and By Laws, including all revisions and additions, shall be made available to the membership of the Association.
ARTICLE 10 AMENDMENTS
Section 1
Each amendment to the Constitution and/or By Laws of the Association must be approved by a two-thirds vote of the active members in good standing in attendance at the annual State Meeting of the Association.
Section 2
All motions from the floor which will result in a constitutional change may be discussed but tabled for one year before a vote will be taken: or proposed constitutional changes may be presented to the executive board in writing prior to the State Meeting.
A. Dues for Active and Associate Membership shall be established by a two-thirds vote of the active membership in good standing in attendance at the annual State Meeting of the Association. Click to see Dues
B. All membership dues shall be paid directly to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Association prior to the annual State Meeting of the Association.
C. The yearly dues shall represent the schools membership in the Association for a period of one year, beginning with the annual State Meeting of the Association.
D. Any school of a consolidated district wishing to retain individual identification must pay separate membership dues to the Association.
ARTICLE 2 DUTIES OF OFFICERS
A. PRESIDENT. He shall execute the provisions of the Constitution and By Laws of the Association. It shall be his duty to make emergency decisions on questions that may arise, the same to hold until the next meeting of the Executive Committee or a stated meeting of the Association, when the decision shall be confirmed or rejected. He shall administer the State Organization and State Solo and Ensemble Contests.
B. VICE-PRESIDENT. He shall have the responsibility of the purchase and distribution of awards furnished by the Association. In the absence of the President, or vacancy of the office of the President, he shall assume the duties of the President.
C. SECRETARY-TREASURER. He shall collect all dues and fees of the Association, pay all bills of the Association on order of the President, assist the President in Correspondence and the issuing of bulletins, act in the capacity of Secretary at all regular meetings of the Association or its Executive Committee, care for the details in planning the Association meetings, contests and such other duties as the President may delegate to him. He shall submit a financial report to each active member of the Association on or before the date of the annual State Meeting of the Association. This report shall include the current approved salary and expense allowance for all officers and members of the Executive Committee and the current schedule of dues and fees. He shall have an audit of his books made by a committee appointed by the President at the annual State Meeting of the Association. He shall pay all bills of the Association by check.
D. District Chairpersons shall represent individual Districts at the meetings of the Executive Committee and at the annual State Meeting of the Association.
The District Chairperson shall send a notice of meeting at least one week prior to the date of the meeting to all music directors and administrators of the member schools in his District. The District Chairperson shall submit a financial report to all active members in his District at the annual District meeting. The District Chairperson shall preside at all meetings of the District, administer District Contests, collect all District Contest fees and notify the President and the Secretary-Treasurer of the dates and locations and the amount of the fees of the District Contests.
The District Chairperson shall submit to the President a financial report of the District Contests prior to the annual State Meeting of the Association. Immediately upon the completion of the District Contests, the District Chairperson shall send to the Vice President the contest entries for all events intending to participate in the State Contests.
E. The EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE shall conduct all business of the Association that cannot be brought before the membership until the next annual State Meeting of the Association. At no time shall it have the power to change this Constitution and/or By Laws. The Executive Committee shall assist the President in administering the State Contests. Each District shall be entitled to one vote on matters presented to the Executive Committee for action
F. The OFFICER-IN-TRAINING shall shadow the current officer for one year prior to assuming the position the following year.
ARTICLE 3 GENERAL RULES FOR STATE CONTESTS
A. DATES
1. District Solo and Ensemble Contests shall be held at least four weeks prior to the State Solo and Ensemble Contest.
2. The State Solo and Ensemble Contest shall be held the first Saturday in May.
3. The State Organization Contest shall be held by the last Saturday in April.
B. FEES
1. State organization and solo and ensemble fees shall be determined by a two-thirds vote of the active membership in attendance at the annual State Meeting of the Association. These fees shall be sent by the District Chairperson to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Association immediately following the District Contests.
2. District organization and solo and ensemble fees shall be determined by the individual Districts and are to be paid to the District Chairperson prior to the District Contests.
C. RATINGS
1. Bands, orchestras, choruses, soloists and ensembles shall be rated in three divisions as follows: Division I, Division II or Division III.
2. A Division I SUPERIOR rating may be awarded to Class A, B and C soloists and ensembles receiving a superior score from the adjudicator. Stage (Jazz) Bands, Lab Bands, Lab Orchestras and Lab Choirs classified by school enrollment and not by the degree of difficulty of the music performed also may earn this rating by receiving a I SUPERIOR score from the adjudicator.
3. A Division I SUPERIOR rating may be given to a band, orchestra or chorus receiving the
appropriate score for this rating ONLY when ALL adjudicators concur. Adjudicators shall not
confer with regard to the rating of any participating organization.
D. CONTEST DATA ENTRY
1. Contest entry materials shall be furnished to participating schools by the District Chairperson. These materials must be filled out completely and signed by the music director and administrator of the participating school.
E. ENTRIES
1. The Executive Committee will accept for State Contest participation any Division I SUPERIOR and Division I organization, solo or ensemble as certified by the District Chairperson.
a. Class F organizations and Class D and E solos and ensembles are not eligible for participation in the State Contest.
2. To qualify for participation in the State Contest, all organizations, soloists and ensembles must participate in the District Contest.
3. Music Directors of eligible organizations and solos and ensembles desiring NOT TO CONTINUE to the State level participation must inform the Secretary-Treasurer of the Association of that fact immediately following the District Contest.
F. AWARDS
1. The Association shall present medals, free of charge, to all soloists, members of ensembles and organizations receiving Division I SUPERIOR, Division I and Division II ratings at the State Contest. In addition, organizations receiving Division I SUPERIOR and Division I ratings will receive a plaque. Medals and Plaques will not be presented to schools delinquent in payment of Association fees until all said fees have been paid.
2. All District medals and comment sheets must be purchased by the District Chairperson from the Vice-President of the Association. Fees for said medals and comment sheets will be determined by a vote of the general membership of the Association upon the recommendation of the Vice-President. The distribution of the medals and comment sheets shall be determined by the Districts.
G. MUSIC LISTS
1. It is required that solos be taken from the required lists.
2. A required list of solos classified according to the difficulty of the music shall be compiled by the Association and made available to the membership. These lists shall be revised every three years through the addition of new material.
3. Solos may be added to the required list by submitting selections to the committee for review.
4. Ensembles shall be classified using the Ensemble Grader system on the IGSMA website.
H. ELIGIBILITY
1. Soloists and members of participating organizations and ensembles must be certified students of the school that they represent.
I. ADJUDICATORS
1. Adjudicators shall be knowledgeable and experienced in teaching and evaluating elementary, middle and junior high school music students.
2. Adjudicators shall be supplied with comment sheets upon which they shall record helpful criticism.
3. Adjudicators shall be instructed to give ratings consistent with their comments on the adjudication sheets.
J. DIRECTORS CONDUCT
1. Directors are not permitted to enter or be present in a solo or ensemble contest room prior to, during or immediately following the performance of a contestant from their school unless they are accompanying the event. The penalty for violating this rule will be the disqualification of the contestant(s) in said event. Adjudicators are instructed to ask directors who ignore this rule to leave the room.
2. A directors conduct should be professional at all times and set forth a proper example for student participants.
K. STUDENT DISCIPLINE - CONTEST CENTERS
1. Each school sending participants to contest must have at least one adult in charge of student conduct and actions. The matter of discipline must be strict due to the large number of students attending contest centers.
2. Any damage to the host school property must be paid for either by the student committing the damage or by the school that the particular student represents.
3. Students committing property damage or offering behavior problems will be reported to the Host Chairperson. The Host Chairperson will report the students name to the music director and to the President of the Association in writing. The Executive Committee will automatically bar that particular student from any future Illinois Grade School Music Association, Southern Division activities. In the case of repeated disciplinary problems from a particular school, that school may be excluded from Association affairs for one school year. Such action will be undertaken only by a majority vote of the Executive Committee.
L. VIOLATION OF CONTEST RULES
1. Any violation of the contest rules of this Association shall be presented to the President. It shall be his duty to present the same to the members of the Executive Committee in writing. The penalty, which shall never be more severe than suspension of one year from the Association, shall be determined by a majority vote of the Executive Committee. Members of this Association shall be responsible for becoming familiar with and for observing all rules.
ARTICLE 4 RULES GOVERNING THE STATE ORGANIZATION CONTEST
A. CLASSIFICATION
Classification will be determined by the official enrollment of all public and denominational schools in the school district grades one through eight. All members of the school bands, orchestras and choruses participating in the contests shall be bona fide, regularly enrolled students of the school sponsoring the bands, orchestras or choruses. Said enrollment must be certified by the superintendent or principal of the schools from which participating members are drawn.
1. Grades 1-8
Class A - Organization from schools with a pupil
enrollment of 2,001 or more
Class B 1,001 to 2,000
Class C 501 to 1,000
Class D 251 to 500
Class E 126 to 250
Class F Organization from schools which have not competed in a District or State Contest
during the previous five years. This classification is restricted to District
participation.
Class G 125 or less.
2. Schools using 9th grade pupils
Class AA- Classification in this group shall be identical to corresponding single
Class BB letter classifications listed above in Grades 1 8. Enrollment for
Class CC classification purposes of Junior High Schools using 9th grade students
Class DD in band, orchestra or chorus shall include enrollment of all schools which might be
Class EE designated as feeder schools and whose pupils eventually attend the Junior High Class FF School as students.
Class GG
3. A public elementary, middle or junior high school band, orchestra or chorus may include denominational school students of the same geographical school district and the combined enrollment of the public and denominational school shall determine the classification of the organization. Likewise, a denominational school may include students in their organizations from a public elementary, middle or junior high school, provided the combined enrollment of the public and denominational schools be used to determine the organizations classification. Under no circumstances may a student participate with more than one band, orchestra or chorus.
4. Notification of a change in school enrollment which affects the classification of an organization must be made in the form of a certified statement by the principal or superintendent of said school not later than February 1 of the current school year. This statement shall be sent to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Association.
B. SELECTION OF MUSIC
1. All bands must be required to play a march and two selections.
2. All orchestras must be required to play three selections.
3. All choruses must be required to perform three memorized selections of which two must be two or three part music. Acapella choruses must perform at least three part music.
C. PERFORMANCE
1. Any qualifying organization has the option to change one or more of its selections between the district and the state contest.
2. All selections to be performed may be chosen by the director. No selection which has been performed in the contest previously may be used unless at least two years have elapsed since that time.
3. Performing times for bands, orchestras and choruses shall be limited to thirty minutes including set-up and exit.
4. Bands, orchestras and choruses shall adhere to the schedule in the warm up room.
5. An organization may warm-up for one minute in the performance room prior to performance of the three selections.
D. INSTRUMENTATION AND VOICING
1. Although no specific rating will be given by the judges for band or orchestra instrumentation, any wide deviation from the norm in that respect will affect the general effect of the performance.
2. All chorus selections shall be performed as scored. All choruses performing two and three part music shall have a minimum of ten members. Choruses performing four part music shall have a minimum of sixteen members.
E. DIRECTORS
Directors may or may not conduct. A director may accompany an organization.
F. ADJUDICATORS
1. There shall be three adjudicators for each performance site at organization contests.
2. To be eligible to perform, directors must furnish for use by the adjudicators, three original scores of each of the selections to be performed. All measures must be numbered consecutively from the beginning to the end of the selections. Failure to have the scores numbered will result in a penalty of being placed one Division lower in the final rating.
3. Adjudicators shall not confer during the contest in regards to the rating of any performance.
G. CONTEST SPECTATORS (including members of all organizations present) must be seated or placed in an area reserved for the audience BEFORE the organization performs.
H. THE HOST DIRECTOR shall be paid by the Association for operating the contest. This fee shall be established by a two-thirds vote of the membership in attendance at the annual State Meeting of the Association.
ARTICLE 5 RULES GOVERNING THE STATE SOLO AND ENSEMBLE CONTEST
A. SOLOS
1. Events
a. Solo instruments acceptable shall include all instruments used in bands and orchestras.
b. Piano
c. Vocal
2. Classification
a. Solos are to be classified solely according to the difficulty of the selections as given on the required lists published by this Association. (School enrollment classifications are in no way correlated to the classifications given to these events.)

Class C Medium
Class D Easy
Class E Beginner
Class D and E are restricted to District participation.
b. The soloist may be entered in any classification desired during his first year of participation in the contests. Thereafter he is REQUIRED to advance at least one classification higher, having received a Division I rating the previous year at District Contest. The soloist may advance as many classifications as desired regardless of previous ratings earned, but is NOT permitted to enter a lower classification. However, vocal soloists may repeat class C and B until a Division 1 rating is achieved two (2) times.
3. Participating schools will be permitted an unlimited number of solo entries.
4. If a student chooses to participate in more than one solo event, he must perform a different selection each on different instruments i.e. piccolo and flute, baritone and trombone, etc.
5. A soloist shall not perform a composition performed by him in former District or State Contest.
6. All soloists will be required to perform the same selection at the State Contest that was performed at the District Contest.
7. All vocal solos must be memorized. Vocal solos shall not read from a score upon penalty of being placed one Division lower in the final rating.
8. All piano solos must be memorized. Piano soloists shall not read from a score upon penalty of being placed one Division lower in the final rating.
9. Wind, string and percussion solos may use music.
10. The performance time of a composition shall not exceed six minutes.
11. All solos shall be accompanied by piano unless the score indicates the composition is unaccompanied.
12. Students appearing without an accompaniment or without an adjudicators score shall be referred to the contest chairperson. They shall make the decision whether or not the student shall perform.
13. A soloist will not be permitted to wear uniform, medals or in any other way reveal his or his schools identity to the adjudicator. A director will not identify a soloist to the adjudicator by any action or deed.
14. To be eligible to perform, soloists shall provide for the adjudicator one original score of their performance selection. All measures must be numbered consecutively from the beginning to the end of the selection. Failure to have the measures numbered will result in a penalty of being placed one Division lower in the final rating.
15. Drum soloists will NOT be required to play rudiments.
16. Piano solo participants must be performing members of the band, orchestra, chorus or accompany events in the solo and ensemble contest.
B. ENSEMBLES
1. INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE EVENTS. Designations as to type of ensemble shall be determined by the number of ensemble members and instrumentation.
a. Ensembles consist of any instrument combination and standardized instrumentation as follows: duets, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets and choirs.
b. Choirs may not exceed fifteen members.
c. Stage (Jazz) Band is considered to be an ensemble and must participate in the Solo and Ensemble Contest. SEE ADDITIONAL RULES TO FOLLOW.
d. No student may play the same titled selection as an ensemble member as he did as a soloist in the same year.
e. Directors may conduct large ensembles with more than six members.
f. Lab Band is considered to be an ensemble and must participate in the Solo and Ensemble Contest. SEE ADDITIONAL RULES TO FOLLOW.
g. Lab Orchestra is considered to be an ensemble and must participate in the Solo and Ensemble Contest. SEE ADDITIONAL RULES TO FOLLOW.
2. VOCAL ENSEMBLE EVENTS. Designations as to the type of ensemble shall be determined by the number of ensemble members and the voicing of the music.
Must be performed as follows:
a. Duets duets shall perform two-part music.
b. Double Duets double duets shall perform two-part music, two voices to a part.
c. Trios trios shall perform three-part music.
d. Triple Trios - triple trios shall perform three-part music, three voices to a part.
e. Quartets quartets shall perform four-part music.
f. Sextets sextets shall perform three-part music, two voices to a part.
g. Double Sextets double sextets shall perform three-part music, four voices to a part or a maximum of twelve members.
h. Octets octets shall perform four-part music, two voices to a part or a maximum of eight members.
i. Double Octets double octets shall perform four-part music, four voices to a part or a maximum of sixteen members.
j. Madrigals madrigal ensembles shall perform madrigal style music as scored.
k. LAB CHOIR is considered to be an ensemble and must participate in the solo and ensemble contest. SEE ADDITIONAL RULES TO FOLLOW.
3. Ensembles are classified according to the difficulty of the selection regardless of the size of the school EXCEPT STAGE (JAZZ) BAND, LAB BAND, LAB ORCHESTRA AND LAB CHOIR. SEE ADDITIONAL RULES TO FOLLOW. Ensembles are NOT required to advance in classification the year after receiving a Division I or I SUPERIOR rating.

Class D and E are restricted to District participation.
4. Participating schools will be permitted an unlimited number of ensemble entries.

10. A director shall be permitted to accompany his own ensembles.
11. Directors are not permitted to enter or be present in an ensemble contest room prior to, during or immediately following the performance of a contestant from his or her school upon penalty of disqualifying the contestants in said event.
EXCEPTIONS When he or she is accompanying the event, when he or she is conducting a large ensemble, Lab Choir, Lab Band, Lab Orchestra or Stage (Jazz) Band.
12. Members of an ensemble shall not be permitted to wear uniform, medals or in any other way reveal their identity or that of their school to the adjudicator. A director shall not identify an ensemble to the adjudicator by any action or deed
13. To be eligible to perform, ensembles shall provide one original score for the selection to be performed. All measures must be numbered consecutively from the beginning to the end of the selection. Failure to have the measures numbered will result in a penalty of being placed one Division lower in the final rating.
C. STAGE (JAZZ) BANDS ADDITIONAL RULES
1. Stage (jazz) bands must participate in a District Contest to be eligible for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest and shall be listed as a choir event.
2. Classification of stage (jazz) bands is determined by the size of the school, as for all other organizations.
3. Fees are the same as for all other ensembles.
4. Ratings and awards are the same as for bands, orchestras and choruses except there is only one adjudicator and no plaque is to be awarded.
5. Stage (jazz) bands must perform two contrasting selections.
6. Music should be performed as scored for a stage (jazz) band.
7. There shall be NO doubling of like instruments with the exception of bass below.
8. Bass guitar may be used in place of string bass or both string bass and bass guitar may be u used.
9. Rhythm guitar may be excluded.
10. The director may conduct the ensemble, but may NOT play with the group.
11. On stage tuning by the director is allowed.
12. Twenty minutes shall be allowed for performance, including set-up and tear-down.
D. LAB CHOIR ADDITIONAL RULES
Lab choir a new form for choral expression to promote experimentation in music other than that considered traditional.
1. A Lab Choir (short for laboratory) should be an experimental group, utilizing the following suggestions: (a) speech choir, (b) rock group, (c) swing choir, (d) experimental sounds,
(e) your choice.
2. Lab choirs must participate in a District Contest to be eligible for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest.
3. Classification for Lab Choirs is determined by the size of the school, as for all other organizations.
4. Fees are the same for all other ensembles.
5. Ratings and awards are the same as for bands, orchestras and choruses except there is only one adjudicator and no plaque is to be awarded.
6. Lab choirs shall perform two selections which should be at least two-part music. Original compositions and arrangements are encouraged but not required.
7. Complete numbered scores for the adjudicator must be submitted. These may be either published or in clear, neat, manuscript form.
8. Twenty minutes shall be allowed for performance including set-up and tear-down.
9. Accompaniment should be limited to six live performers or tape. Any instrumentation is allowed. Pre-recorded tapes will be allowed only when the composition is published expressly for voices and tape.
10. Vocalists shall be limited to a minimum of ten and there is no maximum number of members.
11. The director may accompany, conduct or both, but may not sing. No accompanist may sing with the group.
12. The group shall be judged on the same basis as any other choral group. Instrumental accompanists will not be judged. Only vocalists will receive medals.
E. LAB BANDS ADDITIONAL RULES
1. Lab Bands must participate in a District Contest to be eligible for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest and shall be listed as a choir event.
2. Classification of Lab Bands is determined by the size of the school, as for all other organizations.
3. Fees are the same as for all other ensembles.

6. Rhythm guitar may be excluded.
7. The director may conduct the ensemble, but may NOT play with the group.

10. There will be no maximum or minimum number of students in Lab Bands.
